What is Motif Club?

Motif Club is our weekly live & social online learning program that incorporates group learning as well as self paced modules. Learn more HERE.

What happens if my student gets stuck?

Online Courses come with unlimited support through the integrated instant chat widget. A Motif Class teacher will respond to your student's question during business hours (and many times after hours!). Online Classes also come with two optional video meetings, where they can ask questions and share their progress with the teacher.

Student's in Motif Club have an instructor there with them in the live video club-room during the entire session.

Where does the class take place?

Local Classes take place in a safe rented space, either public school classrooms or privately owned spaces. Click here to see our schedule with current locations.

Private Lessons take place in an agreed upon location, usually the student's home or homeschool pod.

Motif Club takes place in an online video conference via Zoom.

What software do the students use?

Every program we use is open-source and free. It's an integral part of the Motif Class culture. We also run Linux Mint operating system for all our Local Classes and Private Lessons.

Our core programs are:

  • GIMP & Inkscape (2D Graphic Design)
  • Blender (3D Design, Animation & Video Editing)
  • Audacity (Audio Design)
  • LMMS (Music Production)
  • GDevelop 5 (Game Development)
  • VSCodium & Visual Studio Code (Coding)
How does payment work?

We process payments through a secure online payment processing platform. Courses are purchased through a streamlined shopping cart experience.

Minimum Computer Requirements

We supply the computers for Local Classes & Private Lessons.

For Motif Club & Online Courses, here are the minimum computer requirements:

  • Windows, macOS, or Linux (Chrome OS is insufficient)
  • 64-bit dual core 2Ghz CPU with SSE2 support
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 1280×768 display
  • Mouse or trackpad
  • 15 GB of free hard drive space
  • Graphics card with 1 GB RAM, OpenGL 3.3
  • Internet access
  • Motif Club only: A microphone (required), a webcam (optional), & Zoom.
What ages do you accept? Can you make exceptions?

Our courses are designed for 2nd - 12th graders. Since our classes are almost entirely computer based, it's important that the students have basic keyboard and mouse skills to be successful.

Local Classes & Motif Club: It's important for us to maintain these grade restrictions for our Local Classes.

Private Lessons: We are willing to make exceptions to the grade restrictions mainly because we can focus on a more personalized plan for the younger student. For older students there isn't a problem.

Online Courses: If there is someone available to help your younger student through the course then please feel free to register them for the course. For older students there isn't a problem.

What is Minetest?

Minetest is a free computer game almost identical to the popular game "Minecraft". Minetest is a great end-of-class reward that students look forward to. It's also a great team building activity and has many beneficial learning qualities including fundamentals of coding, electrical circuits, increasing spatial abilities and more. If your student doesn't want to play or you'd rather them not, they can "free-design" or work on homework instead.

Local Classes: For our longer Local Classes (around 2.5 hours), if your student reached the daily goal on their project they are welcome to play Minetest with other students for the dedicated last 20 minutes of class.

Private Lessons: Minetest time is optional, and decided upon when building your customized program.

Online Courses: Our independent, self-paced, online courses do not incorporate Minetest.

Motif Club: We do regularly incorporate Minetest into our weekly online program Motif Club.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Will my student get breaks?

Local Classes & Private Lessons vary in length depending on location.

  • For classes around 1 hour we don't generally take breaks.
  • For classes around 2-3 hours students can eat snacks during the first 10 minutes of class. Roughly half way through class we also take a 10 minute break.
What happens if my student misses a class?

If your student misses a Local Class or Private Lesson you have two options:

  1. We can try our best to catch them up during the next class
  2. We can grant access to an online version of the specific missed class for them to catch up at home.
Is there a late pick-up fee?

Local Classes: We charge a $1 per minute late pick-up fee per student.
